Team Building

The impact of teamwork on our lives is profound. Teams dominate and permeate the world in which we live, work or play - almost everything that surrounds us today can be traced back to a team-based effort!

Research (Training Mag. May 2017) states that most employees spend over 50% of their time working in teams. Yet this same research found that less than 10% of these team members felt their teams performed at an optimal level 90% of the time.

Additionally, this research showed that in general, team members and management could only count on their team members about 50% of the time to meet their assignments and fulfill their goals. This can result in missed deadlines, poor work product and dissatisfied customers.

Causes of Team Failure

What causes teams to be unsuccessful, not to achieve the high performance they want and deserve? Some of these causes include:

  • Poorly defined mission and goals

  • Vague shared purpose

  • Unclear roles and responsibilities

  • Lack of mutual responsibility and accountability

  • Personality and power struggles

  • Groupthink and leaders encourage it

  • Group members are not familiar with each other or new to the organization

The L.I.F.E. Management Systems Growth Model

for Team Building

 Step 1: Learn

We gather necessary and valuable information about the team by talking with all relevant parties, such as the team leader, selected team members, key stakeholders in the team's output (internal and external customers), HR, and management.

This learning process may involve developing surveys or questionnaires to address specific relevant areas of team functioning confidentially. It may also include attending team meetings to observe the team's interaction and process.

After gathering this information, we can strategically move to the next steps in your specially designed team development program.

Step 2: Implement

In this step, we design and implement a customized plan to address your team's specific developmental needs. This may involve options such as:

  • Develop targeted training modules for all team members

  • Provide one on one coaching for the team leader or team members

  • Work with the team leader to deal with specific issues such as managing interpersonal conflicts and power struggles.

  • Conduct an offsite retreat for all team members devoted to discussions and activities for team building and team development. (This option is generally more geared to executive and management team development.)

Step 3: Feedback

After implementing your chosen team development plan, it is essential to gather data on how the team is improving and progressing. This is achieved by using appropriate metrics based on the goals of the team-building program and the needs of the organization. It may also involve targeted interviews and questionnaires with selected team stakeholders.

Step 4: Evaluate

The feedback process described above allows everyone to see and celebrate the progress that the team has made. It also points out areas for continued focus and work regarding the team's development.
